Spring Home Maintenance Tips
Preparing your home for spring isn't just about spring cleaning. We've rounded up 10 spring maintenance tips to get your home prepared for the warm season ahead.
Examine the roof for any broken shingles, and schedule an inspection if you see anything that doesn't look right.
Clean the gutters and make sure they're clear and ready to direct those April showers away from your home.
Examine the exterior of the chimney for any damage, and have the flue cleaned and inspected by a chimney sweep.
Prepare lawn equipment for the season by draining the old oil, replacing the air filter, and cleaning and sharpening blades.
Service your HVAC system by changing the filter, checking hoses for leaks, and vacuuming dust from the unit and connections.
Trim dead, overgrown branches or shrubs that might blow over in during a storm. Always keep healthy trees and bushes trimmed away from utility wires.
Check weather stripping on windows and doors to make sure that you're keeping warm summer air out and cool air in.
Repair small holes in screens of your windows and doors. It's great to let a cool breeze into your home; not so great to let the bugs in.
Switch ceiling fans to counter-clockwise, which pushes cool air down and creates a wind chill effect to cool you in the warmer months.
Replace batteries in your smoke detectors. This should be done twice a year, at the time change. If you missed it at Daylight Saving Time, do it now.
