Spring Pony Roundup
The annual Pony Swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island gains the attention of locals and hundreds of tourist each year in July! Many are surprised to learn that the famous Saltwater Cowboys round up the Assateague ponies in the spring and fall, in addition to their celebrated Pony Swim during the summer. On April 12 and 13, the ponies will be rounded up into corrals on Assateague Island for an overall health check by a veterinarian before they are auctioned off in July.
The "Southern Herd", located on the southern end of Assateague Island, is rounded up Friday afternoon starting at 4 pm. Fifty wild ponies are herded along the beach access road which leads to the Woodland Trail Coral. The roundup usually takes a couple hours and spectators are able to view the ponies in the corral after the roundup.
First thing in the morning visitors can witness the roundup of 100 ponies further north of Assateague Island. The"Northern Herd" is rounded up into a corral which is about 3 miles from the Service Road. The roundup of the herd takes about 5-6 hours to complete due to there being more ponies than the southern herd and more ground to cover.
- The Spring Pony Roundup is a great opportunity for the public to view the ponies up close without large crowds of the Pony Swim and Auction in July.
- If you are planning to view the Ponies in the "Southern Corral" Saturday get there early. The vet will start in the morning and once all the Ponies have been treated they will be released.
- For a better view bring a step stool so you can see over the top of the fence.
